Hearing loss in Children

Timely identification and intervention can help reduce the impact of hearing loss on the child’s life.

Children live in a busy world with many distractions. Communication can be challenging in such situations especially when they have a hearing loss.Hearing loss is a serious concern as it interferes with the child’s ability to develop speech, language, and social skills. Babies with hearing loss do not startle at loud noises, do not turn to the source of a sound after 6 months of age, may seem to hear some sounds but not others. Children with hearing loss can have speech that is delayed and not clear, may have trouble following directions.

Early intervention:

Detection and diagnosis of hearing impairment at an early age or as soon as the impairment has occurred refers to early identification. The goal of early intervention is to provide every child with hearing loss the opportunity to develop an effective communication system. Early Intervention services provide families with the information and support they need to maximize their child’s overall development.
